Moving Animals to Kennedy

Location of Studies: Currently, all studies are conducted in the Kennedy Center. In some cases, it may feasible or preferable to conduct experiments in another facility. In this case, contact core staff for help and fee structures.

Transfer forms: Individual experimenters are responsible for transfer of their own animals. Transfer forms are available from the Animal Institute (in person or on the web site). The animals remain under the same protocol and PI. Mice are generally transferred to B12 and rats to B10 or B14.Animals should be transferred at least 1 weeks (but preferably 2 weeks) prior to the start of the experiment. Animals remain under the PI's protocol number and name. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure that ALL animals have been transfered and that the transfer takes place at least 1 week prior to the start of behavioral testing.

It is highly recommended that a pilot study be conducted with your specific strain, age , sex and treatments to establish the parameters of each test (such as stimulus intensities, testing durations, delay times etc).

Grant Support

For those PIs who support the Core with a % effort, we do not have “rollover minutes”. Unless the core director expressly agrees in writing, if you have not used your alloted % effort, you may not apply that after the grant period has ended.

The fees (or % effort) applies to normal working days and hours. If core staff are required to work weekends, overtime or holidays, these charged at double the agreed rate, unless this rate has been expressly waived.

Core users may use the core outside normal hours in an unassisted manner only if they have be approved for unassisted use.

Databases and Identifing Subjects

Database: An animal list clearly identifying each animal, condition, genotype, age etc is REQUIRED at least 1 week before the start of the experiments. A blank form will be sent to you or a template can be downloaded here. A COMPLETED and CORRECT animal list must be received 1 week prior to the start of the experiments.

Animal ID: Core Users must tail mark their own subjects (see instructions) Download.Cage Cards should have all the info required (see instructions) Download

Core staff require authorship if they have made substantive contributions to a publication. This includes conducting experiments, analyzing experiments, graphing, writing the manuscript, designing and then training a staff member to conduct the experiments. If you are in doubt, or would prefer not to share authorship, this must be expressly agreed to in writing by the core director.

Invasive procedures may not be conducted in the core facilities. Inhalation anaesthetics and hazardous chemicals may not be used in the core facilities.
